Touch Typing & Technology
for Academic Success

Being able to touch type is helpful for anyone. For dyslexics and others that struggle with literacy it is a VITAL skill.

Almost every dyslexia assessor recommends learning to touch type but few dyslexic teens can do so adequately. This denies them the ability to access technologies that would help them achieve more.

Technology opens a wealth of support to students with poor literacy,
touch typing is the key to accessing that technology

To help empower students to take full advantage of learning tools available for proficient typists, I designed this unique course.

Why a typing course for “Academic Success”?

Most schools are not set up to meet the learning needs of all learners. Experience has taught me that dyslexic learners need the following to achieve their academic potential:

  • TECHNOLOGICAL LEARNING TOOLS

If students cannot type, they cannot make the most of the transformative (and often free) learning tools.

  • EFFECTIVE PARENTAL SUPPORT

Dyslexic students benefit greatly when parents support learning at home.

How does this course differ from other typing courses?

This unique course seamlessly combines the three vital components for academic success:

1.     TOUCH-TYPING

Once able to type, students then have access to effective learning technologies that can help them achieve more academically.

2.     TECHNOLOGY

We teach students how to use this technology and advise what they should use to make their lives easier and improve their grades. Knowing these skills motivates students to do the necessary practise.

3.     PARENTAL SUPPORT

Finally, we train parents to support their children’s learning effectively.

It differs from other courses in the results achieved, Content & Delivery.

Results Achieved

  • Touch Typing for Academic Success is highly effective in helping students maximize their typing speed and accuracy.

  • On completion of the course, students should be capable of typing their home/course work, enabling them to use learning tools to get higher grades.

  • If students actively participate, they should not need to attend more typing courses.
As a parent of 3 dyslexic children, I got fed up of paying for multiple touch-typing courses. This is why I have designed something completely different.

Content

  • Regarding content, the course teaches

    • Touch typing

    • How to utilise technology and learning tools to improve grades.

  • Students are often reluctant to do the necessary practise that learning to type requires. Learning how typing can help students perform better academically. provides the intrinsic motivation required to complete the necessary practise.

  • Multiple typing solutions are used to keep the lessons fresh and stop students getting bored.

Delivery

Scheduled at the beginning of school holiday to ensure students can devote the time required to complete the necessary practice unencumbered by school, clubs and homework.

The course combines intensive supervised tuition AND distance learning.

  • Intensive supervised tuition

    • Has a fixed start and end time when students are taught how to type & how to use their typing skills to get better grades.

    • Each student is provided with a dedicated webcam to ensure correct technique is learned.

    • The duration of the supervised section depends on the school holiday and the age of the students.

      • Secondary students can become proficient typists during 1 week school holiday if they follow the set practice.

      • Primary students benefit from having the longer school holiday to practice.

  • Distance learning

    • After completing the face-to-face classes, students are set work to complete outside lessons to establish muscle memory.

    • The benefit of this is that this practise can be done ANY WHERE, at ANY TIME.

    • All students need is to have access to the internet, making it ideal for holiday periods.

    • The amount of daily practise required depends on the length of the school holidays.is typically:

      • 20 minutes a day (for a long school holidays)

      • 1 hour a day (for short school holidays)

    • Students are kept on track by regular webinars

      • weekly webinars for long school holidays

      • daily webinars in short school holidays

THIS COURSE REALLY DOES HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO
CHANGE A CHILD’S LIFE

Fed up of reading???

Given there is nothing else like it, it is hard to describe in writing.

This video explains how it:

  • Differs from traditional courses

  • Helps students achieve better grades.

BEING ABLE TO TOUCH TYPE CAN SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF WRITTEN WORK, CONFIDENCE & EXAM GRADES

  • Few dyslexic teenagers taking formal exams are competent touch typists

  • Students often underachieve because they run out of time.

  • Touch typing is much quicker than hand writing, enabling students to write more in a finite exam time.

  • Motivating children to practise is hard – students need to fully understand the benefit for them to have the intrinsic motivation to practise.

  • Learning must be engaging & fun!!

Who should attend?

The course is designed for dyslexics, and those who display dyslexic tendencies (struggle with getting ideas down in writing) but any student would benefit from attending.

We aim to teach students to touch type before formal external exam courses commence (i.e. before they start year 10 in the UK).

We can teach older students but would strongly recommend they learn earlier.

Without significant practice, the speed and accuracy required to improve grades simply cannot be obtained.

When to learn to touch type?

While a child’s dexterity often improves in their teen years, the advantages of learning to touch type in primary school are significant.

Starting secondary school with typing as one’s normal way of working should greatly reduce the amount of evidence required to justify being a laptop user in formal exams.

While a student’s ability improves in teenage years, the motivation to practice significantly decreases with peer pressure and increased school workload playing a part too.

Feedback & Results

When compared to other courses on the market
this initiative offers great value

“Teaching my children to touch type was the single most beneficial skill they learned. It enabled them to access a wealth of helpful solutions that improved the grades they achieved throughout the year, increasing their confidence and self esteem. It has also had a significant positive impact on their exam results.
— Caroline Bateman, Founder of Achieve Now
Touch typing has been so vital for me during my exams, without my laptop privilege and typing speed I don’t know how I would have achieved the grades I did.
