How touch typing improves academic results

Training a child to touch type requires a significant amount of time, money and effort but it is a worthwile investment.

Being able to touch type is helpful for anyone. For dyslexics and others that struggle with literacy it is a VITAL skill that can significantly improve attainment and confidence.

denying them the ability to access helpful technologies.

Why teach your child to touch type? - Advantages of touch typing

Improve the quality of written work

When not working under exam conditions, typists can access functionality that significantly improve the quality of their work, these include:

  • Spell & grammar check

  • Synonyms and Thesaurus

  • Colour backgrounds to help with visual stress

  • Dyslexia friendly fonts

  • Utilise third party solutions to improve the quality of their work. For example, Gramarly, and mind mapping.

  • Having work read aloud (enabling proofreading)

Improve grades achieved in exams

If a student is a laptop user in exams they can:

  • Complete work much quicker than writing by hand. A students ability to write under time constraints is an important contributor to their exam performance.

  • Produce legible work. No marks are lost because of difficulties deciphering handwriting.

  • Copy correct spellings without slowing down. This is particularly important in exams where marks are deducted for incorrect spelling.

  • Organise, correct and reorganisation their work quickly and easily.

Teaching my children to touch type was the single most beneficial skill they learned.
It enabled them to access a wealth or helpful soltuions that improved the grades they achieved throughout the year, increasing their confidence and self esteeem.
It has also had a significant positive impact on their exam results.

When to learn to touch type?

While a child’s dexterity often Improves in their teen years the advantages of learning to touch type in primary school are significant.

Starting secondary school with typing as ones ‘normal way of working’ should greatly reduce the amount of evidence required to justify being a laptop user. This makes it far more likely that students can be a laptop user in formal exams.

While dexterity improves in teenage years the motivation to practice significantly decreases. Peer pressure and increase school workload also have a negative impact motivation.

Without significant practice the speed and accuracy required to improve grades simply cannot be obtained.

Proof reading own work - Text to Speech

The ability to proof read what you have written enables the writier to be able to hear mistakes and make the necessary corrections. This functionality is called text to speech or TTS.

Video showing this functionlality --To be created

Text to speech is availabe free of charge but how you enable it differs dependent on the device you are typing on.

YouTube play list explaining text to speech and how to enabling text to speech functionality on various devices.

Touch typing has been so vital for me during my exams, without my laptop privilege and typing speed I don’t know how I would have achieved the grades I did.
