Touch Typing for Academic Success
During Course Information for Parents

What’s needed to start the course

  • Internet connection;

  • Zoom invite - sent out the day before so you don’t have to search for it;

  • Laptop / desktop;

  • Webcam;

  • Blind keyboard;

  • Pen and paper;

  • Typing Club Fastrack Worksheet.

Initial webcam set up

To begin the course, I need to see the student’s faces. To do this you can use your own webcam or the webcam we supply pointed at the student’s face.
Later in the lesson we will direct students on how to use webcams so their instructor can supervise finger placement.
For younger children, it might be helpful to have adult help when we do this so please be in shouting distance.

Communication during lessons

I don’t tend to answer emails when I am teaching. Should you need to contact me urgently please call my mobile - 07903 831353

Please ensure I have the correct number to contact you or another adult should your child run into difficulties.

This doesn't happen often with secondary students but is a more regular occurrence for primary-age students.

Instant rewards

The only area where teaching remotely is not as good as face-to-face is that we cannot reward students immediately with prizes for working hard or making good progress.

We want the course to be as enjoyable and fun as possible. Prizes/treats are a terrific way of doing this.

Something that has worked recently is if parents get in their children’s favourite treats and working in partnership with me, give these as rewards when they are deserved.

Could I ask you to get a few treats in for this purpose?

Learning Tools

Each day students will learn something about how typing can help them improve their school work.

Talking to you about what they have learned will reinforce their learning.

Please encourage students to tell you, or even better, show you what they have learned.

Where possible encourage them to use the tools when completing school work. The sooner they get into the habit of using them the better.

The goal of the course isnt just to help students become better typists

we want to help students use this skill to improve their grades
