During the supervised training - Information for parents

PLEASE read before the the course starts

Learning to type can be tedious and boring.

To help make the course interesting we use many different solutions and games. To do this, students need to be able to multitask when following instructions.

Can your child follow multistep instructions?

Students need to be able to log in to numerous solutions with different user ids and passwords.

If your child struggles with follow multistep instructions,

please stay close by during the course to help

If you are not with your child and they struggle, we will call you on the mobile number you supplied when registering.

Please make sure you are always contactable

Two Keyboards are required

  • PLEASE do NOT unplug the regular keyboard from the machine;

  • Students will need a regular keyboard to type user id/passwords, which is too difficult on the ‘Blind ‘keyboard.

What do we do if a student is having difficulty?

  • Students will be in small groups when practising typing;

  • Each teacher will give their mobile number in the chat at the beginning of the session;

  • Teachers will not pick up emails when teaching or supervising typing;

  • If you need to contact a teacher, please WhatsApp or text them on the mobile number provided;

  • If there is an urgent problem, call us.
    Text is less invasive as we supervise/teach but if the problem is urgent, do call.

teachers canNOT easily check emails when the course is in progress

Would your child benefit from one-to-one support?

  • We have high staff-student ratios.

  • Where necessary we try to provide additional support to help overcome particular difficulties.
    However, the course is not costed to supply one to one support, hence for some students parental support is essential.

  • We are aware that some children do not like being helped by their parents.
    In these cases, we recommend you have someone else on hand to help;

  • Alternatively, we can often organise cost-effective one-to-one support on your behalf, which you can pay for directly.
    We will need prior notice to organise this.

Zoom invite

  • To keep things simple, we always use the same Zoom invite and password;

  • This will be emailed to every parent before the course starts;

  • If students try to enter the Zoom meeting before the teacher has logged in they will get an error message that is not meaningful. (Zoom mistakenly will inform you that the meeting is scheduled the first time that invite was used.);

  • It is advisable to use the latest version of Zoom.
    This avoids unexplained technical difficulties which can frustrate and discouraged students

Pre-Course Parents Zoom Meetings

  • Parents are invited to a pre-course Zoom meeting a couple of days before the supervised section of the course begins, an opportunity to overcome any problems before the course starts.

  • Two different options will be given to parents for the pre-course meeting to ensure as many as possible can attend.

  • If you cannot make the times scheduled please contact us to arrange an alternative.

  • It is HIGHLY stressful for all concerned if students are unable to connect to Zoom when the course starts.

  • It is VERY hard for Achieve Now staff to help with technical issues once the course has started.

It is HIGHLY recommended that you use the Zoom invite provided
to check cameras/microphones are working correctly

What if the student has technical issues during the course?

Technical issues sometimes occur and we tell students at the start not to worry if this happens - we want to minimise stress!

What can be done if students fail to progress?

While we are always looking out for students that could be struggling and will contact you with suggestions if we have any concerns, Parents are sometimes in a better position to notice if their child is struggling.

If you have any concerns that your child is not progressing or is unhappy, please do let us know.
